After a nightclub singing, single mother has her era-defining fashion accessory stolen from her by an unscrupulous but charming competitor, she fights to reclaim her invention. Based on the true story. |
This is a tone poem about the nuts & bolts of capitalism - but it's also a breezy, entertaining, and fun yarn about a tiny ball of elastic & velvet challenging the system and fixing hair. It's based on Barbie-sized I.P., but you'll fall in love with its confident, heart-felt authenticity.

Full of deeply relatable characters with motivations both comical and endearing in their simplicity, this is a sophisticated product-biopic that will make you wonder what all that BARBIE fuss was about. A tightly structured narrative with a protagonist you love to root for.

A funny, fast-paced true story of the genesis of one of the most common cosmetic hair products in the world, this effort is an homage to American entrepreneurship. We eagerly follow Rommy, the inventor of the "Scunci" as she learns the business ropes and goes to great lengths to protect her rights with a stunning, ERIN BROCKOVICH-style courtroom climax.

Halfway through the ninth season, he was promoted to the writing staff. He was there for the 12-year run. After Big Bang, he wrote on "Call Me Kat" starring Mayim Bialik.
I'm jealous of this script. Like, really jealous because it's outstanding. I don't understand why it's not in theaters already and Deadline's not running blurbs about what's next from The Scrunchie Movie's writer. All the characters sing, but Rommy? Just like nobody needs the quadratic equation after grade school, Rommy doesn't need a microphone. There's a brightness to her, a greatness to her — not just as a strong female business person, but as a mother, and as a friend. I rooted for her to succeed and I suffered with her when she failed. All that to say, this script left me feeling so happy.

A writer herself, she has a strong belief in trying to serve the writer's vision, while utilizing her knowledge of the industry to inform any notes.
A charming and captivating feminist tale of the woman who birthed the ubiquitous hair tie and a revolution of women entrepreneurs, THE SCUNCI is an ode to perseverance and the power of belief. This story feels like a classic David vs Goliath story distilled into a single emblem of womanhood - the hair scunci (I'll never call it a Scrunchy again).

I loved this script!!! This was definitely one of the best scripts I have read for the Gauntlet. I loved it from the very first pages. It has a ton of marketing potential. The story is engaging and heartwarming. This is just what we need today. I can't wait to see this film come to life.

As a screenwriter, John was nominated for a Writers Guild of America Award for his work on the Emmy Award-winning Showtime series ""Nurse Jackie." John has extensively lectured on screenwriting at USC, UCLA, AFI, Art Center College of Design and the NC School of the Arts.
This screenplay is a smart, funny, and heartfelt biopic that belongs in the same lineage as Joy, The Founder, The Beanie Bubble, Flash of Genius, and The Social Network. At its core is Rommy, a dynamic and relatable protagonist whose inventive spirit and resilience bring to life the fascinating true story behind the scrunchie. Blending comedy and drama, the script explores ambition, ownership, and the challenges of breaking through in a male-dominated world. With its nostalgic appeal, cultural resonance, and sharp storytelling, this project has the potential to be a crowd-pleaser.
Charles Zucker
Story Analyst for Roserock Films at Warner Brothers Studios
Having graduated from UW Madison with a B.A. degree in Communications, Charles is currently a reader for Roserock Films at Warner Brothers Studios. Before college, he gained experience working summers as a stunt driving instructor at Willow Springs Raceway, which proved invaluable in steering through convoluted second acts. Since graduating, Charles has done editing and PA work for various short films. He loves working in and writing comedy, but submarine movies ("Das Boot," "Wolf's Call," "Run Silent, Run Deep") are his favorite movies to watch.
A fascinating look into the life and struggle of the woman that started the scrunchie era. Rommy Revson has an attitude and outlook on life that keeps you rooting for her. THE SCRUNCHIE MOVIE has plenty of twists and turns with strong themes such that I know I'll be calling it a "scunci" (the correct name!) from now on.
Jim Herzfeld
Screenwriter - Meet The Parents
Jim Herzfeld graduated from UCLA's School of Theater, Film and Television (TFT) and his earliest TV credit – on the ground-breaking "It's Garry Shandling's Show" -- was followed by 10 years of writing and producing episodes on dozens of sitcom staffs, including the Fox TV classic "Married... With Children."
Herzfeld's earliest feature film work was a writing credit on the cult comedy "Tapeheads" in 1988. His most successful work was writing the screenplay for the 2000 film "Meet the Parents" as well as writing the story and screenplay for its 2004 sequel "Meet the Fockers." To date, both films remain two of the 20 Highest Grossing Comedies ever.
More recently, in 2015 Jim's screenplay for "Meet the Parents" was selected by the Writer's Guild of America as one of the "101 Funniest Screenplays" of all time.
Herzfeld has also guest lectured at NYU, UCLA, and AFI and was a Finals Judge for the Austin Film Festival's Comedy Screenplay Competition.
This well-paced and lithe, breezy screenplay — the true tale of a struggling single mother who invents/creates something simple that becomes ubiquitous — "The Scrunchie Movie" nails the "true story of a single mom inventor" narrative by keeping things light, sticking to the facts, and focusing on a fun female protagonist you can't help but root for and cheer for. So whether it's in your hair, or on your wrist, or coming soon to a theatre near you, it's Scünci ("skoon-chee") and "The Scrunchie Movie" for the win.

Some beautiful work indeed and the story has so much HEART. Could certainly be a hit film that any star would love to play! Just full of wonderful moments throughout. I'd move this forward easily in the Gauntlet!

A true ode to the American entrepreneur. This script reveals how the simplist things we take for granted are created when desperation intersects with genius. Rommy is the kind of breakout part that can make an actress's career.
Alvaro Rodriguez
Producer
Born and raised along the South Texas border, Alvaro Rodriguez never felt constrained to genre or superficial categorization. He has always been drawn to stories of shapeshifters, of metamorphosis and revelation, and considers himself a smuggler. That led him from working with Robert Rodriguez on genre films like "Planet Terror" and "Machete," to co-creating the animated Netflix series "Seis Manos." He most recently served as a producer on the Netflix series "Florida Man" and as a supervising producer on Showtime/Amazon's "American Rust." He is currently developing projects in the animated space with IDW and Anima Studios and is attached as a showrunner to an animated series developed by Pedro Cristiani, director of "Deus Irae," from XYZ Films. He is developing adult live-action projects for film and television with Invention Studios/Abot Hameiri/Fremantle Media, Bender/Brown Productions, and is a co-executive producer on "Tu, Mio," an international feature shooting soon from Danish director Bille August.
THE SCRUNCHIE MOVIE is a fun, classic story (with a twist!): the invention that changes the world, the inventor who got screwed over, and how the inventor fought back and won, sorta. Inventive and heartfelt.
David Hopwood
Producer
Hopwood has produced films such as "Den of Thieves," "Escape Plan," and "Immortals," as well as series such as "Power" for Starz. He currently co-runs a new production shingle, "A Group of Ferrets." He has a degree in Cinema/Television from USC and began his career in entertainment with Michael Ovitz's Artist Management Group. There, he worked for talent manager and producer Ellen Goldsmith-Vein (currently CEO of The Gotham Group).
What a fun and refreshing read about an untold story that deserves the spotlight. The main character's journey is filled with real, heartfelt struggles that feel honest and raw - making it impossible not to root for her. Authentic, engaging, and full of charm, this is a story that sticks with you.
Benjamin Thornton

Benjamin Thornton is an award-winning writer, filmmaker, and produced playwright. He has worked at DC Comics, Sony Pictures, Cartoon Network, and most recently as a Creative Development Executive for Warner Bros Discovery where he was across the global development of Scripted and Unscripted Formats.
Funny, irreverent, brazen, and brilliant, this is the kind of noisy storytelling we need in the market today. It's easy to root for the underdog when it is Rommy, the smart but tough nightclub singer and single mother who also happened to revolutionize the hair-tie industry in the big-haired era of the 1980's. With a winning determination to fight back, Rommy takes the battle out of the sewing room factories and into the federal courts as she pulls back the curtain of corruption and greed of Corporate America.

From there he went on to Broken Road Productions where he worked on Netflix's SENIOR YEAR starring Rebel Wilson, PLAYING WITH FIRE starring John Cena and Keegan-Michael Key, the Universal Pictures drama ALL MY LIFE, and New Line Cinema's MORTAL KOMBAT based on the hit video game.
An impressively crafted and engaging approach to exploring IP. Rommy's voice is distinctly articulated, lending authenticity and depth, while the narrative unfolds with a smooth and compelling pace.

An underdog tale of one of the most important inventions that is useful in day-to-day life. From the moment we go with Rommy, we want her to win. The greatest thing about this story is that it is not preachy about the theme the writer blends in here, especially with the patriarchy Rommy has to face at every step of her way, and the final showcase in court is one to cheer for!

What I thought would merely be another entry in the I.P. race truly shocked me. Here's a writer with an affectingly confident, surprisingly authentic voice (that transcends the trappings of a "product movie") who makes you hear someone like Rachel Brosnahan or Lady Gaga in the scrappy - femininist-but-fun - lead role...you love the main character's voice and you start to see a movie of possible "Barbie" proportions.

A well-written script with a concept you never knew you'd want to see a movie about!

Joe has an MBA from Yale University and completed a yearlong fellowship at Stanford University in 2023. Someone will be lucky to make this into a first-rate movie.
Brian Gunn
Screenwriter - Brightburn
Brian has been a professional screenwriter since 1999, when he and his cousin/writing partner Mark wrote the MTV movie "2gether," a spoof about a fictional boy band. It spawned a concert tour, two top-40 albums, and a TV series created and executive produced by the Gunns.
Since that time, the Gunns have transitioned from television into film. The box-office hit "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island," starring Dwayne Johnson and Michael Caine, was their first widely released theatrical movie.
The Gunns wrote and executive produced the superhero horror movie "Brightburn," starring Elizabeth Banks, which has become a worldwide success and are currently working on a film project for Warner Bros. and a TV project for Amazon.
This script comes after an era's worth of movies about the origin of some big product - Joy, Air, Tetris, Flamin' Hot, BlackBerry, Unfrosted, etc. Can the market handle one more? It's worth a shot, especially with a story and a script - and a main character - as engaging as this one.
