Jack Azadi is the very first writer to make it through the Gauntlet with his script FROM THE SHADOWS TO THE SUN. A truly badass script that got a reputation for making readers cry. It only reasons that Jack should be the first writer that we let answer a few questions to give us an insight into who he is.
Can you give us some of your background?
I began writing after returning home from fighting ISIS as a western volunteer in the Kurdish Army, a decision I took after meeting survivors of the Yazidi genocide in 2014. As a Special Forces veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, I spent a decade in war zones as a security consultant protecting news teams, diplomats, and engineers rebuilding fragile states. A survivor of complex-PTSD, I've garnered numerous accolades over the years and have a certain penchant for underdogs.
What made you want to become a screenwriter?
As I alluded to in the above answer, it was from having spent a large part of my life in war zones, both as a security consultant and a soldier. Having witnessed first hand the suffering and fallout from these austere times in conflict zones, I was struck by how my efforts in foreign wars mostly created more harm than good. Combined with my love for cinema I wanted to ultimately tell stories from those experiences, to exact change and create a wider understanding of people from across the globe; to build and create, not destroy.
What is your favorite film or TV show?
There's simply too many to list, but I'm a big fan of 70s cinema: The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, Sorcerer, Cross of Iron, The Man Who Would be King.
Who is your favorite screenwriter/filmmaker?
Another tough question! Sam Peckinpah created some truly unique and engaging films, so I have a soft spot for his filmography.
Do you have a screenwriting hot take?
Prepare for the grind, it's a savagely long road to achieve, and the odds are really stacked against your creative efforts. It's not for the faint hearted but can, in and of itself, create a release.
Before entering the Gauntlet, what was your strategy for breaking into the industry?
Before the Gauntlet I relied on competitions: namely The Page and the Nicholl.
Up until now, what have been your screenwriting "wins?"
Nicholl Top 50 out of 8200 entrants, the Grand Prize of the Page Awards from 11,000 entrants, and passing the Gauntlet.
How many screenplays have you written?
I've just started my 19th and 20th features.
What is your favorite genre to write?
Action thriller
What is your process?
A rough outline then into the real meat of a subject matter.
Do you have any tips on starting a new screenplay? What about finishing one?
Do your research, be truthful to yourself, and kick ass.
What is the first thing you do after finishing a screenplay?
Restrain myself from sending it out before it is ready.
